Day 4: A Brand New Identity
Devotional
Your past does not get the final word. That is not wishful thinking. That is Scripture. Second Corinthians 5:17 says that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has passed away, and the new has come. Because of your union with Jesus, you are not simply a forgiven version of your old self. You are someone entirely new, defined not by your history but by His nature living in you. This is one of the most freeing truths in the entire Bible. Your failures do not define you. Your wounds do not determine your worth. Your past patterns do not have to be your future. You are joined to Christ, and His righteousness, His purpose, and His glory are now yours. This also means that living right is no longer about earning God's approval. It is about expressing who you already are. You do not live a holy life so that God will accept you. You live a holy life because it is now your nature to reflect Christ. That is a completely different motivation, and it produces a completely different kind of life. You are not who you used to be. Stop letting the enemy convince you otherwise. You are a new creation, united with Christ, and everything that is true of Him is now true of you.
Bible Verse
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New King James Version (NKJV))
Reflection Question
In what ways are you still allowing your past identity to define you, rather than the new identity you have been given through your union with Christ?
Quote
"Our past may describe where we've been, but it does not determine who we are now. Our failures, our wounds, our temptations, our former ways of living don't have the final word. We are joined and made one with Christ."Pastor John Pool
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that I am not who I used to be. Help me walk in the truth of my new identity today and stop letting my past have a voice it no longer deserves. Amen.
