Day 3: Against Hope, In Hope
Devotional
Abraham was a hundred years old, and Sarah was ninety. There was no human reason to think they would ever have a child. Every natural fact said it couldn't happen.
But God had made a promise. Romans 4:18 says that contrary to hope, in hope Abraham believed. He held onto what God had spoken, not what his circumstances were telling him.
Abraham wasn't ignorant of his situation. He knew how old he was. There was real, measurable evidence that what he hoped for would not work. Romans 4:19 says he did not consider his own body or the deadness of Sarah's womb. He didn't deny the facts. He just refused to let them have the final say.
Some of you have been given promises over the years. Something was spoken over you, but because it didn't happen in the time and season you thought it should, you set it aside. It may be time to go back and pick that promise up again. Tell God you're sorry for putting it on the back burner, and put it back in front of you. Even when we are faithless, He remains faithful.
Hope doesn't require favorable circumstances. It requires a trustworthy God.
Bible Verse
"Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, 'So shall your descendants be.'" - Romans 4:18 (New King James Version (NKJV))
Reflection Question
Is there a promise from God that you've set aside because it didn't happen on your timeline? What would it look like to pick it back up?
Quote
"Your circumstance, your situation, your condition, your reality right now doesn't have the final say." - Pastor John Pool
Prayer
Father, I pick back up the promises I set aside. Even when I have been faithless, You have stayed faithful. Help me see my situation through Your Word, not my circumstances. Amen.
