Day 3: When Your Expectations Are Wrong
Devotional
The disciples on the road to Emmaus were not bad people. They were sincere. They genuinely loved Jesus. But their expectations of what He was supposed to do had been shaped more by cultural hope than by Scripture. And that gap between expectation and reality is exactly where their faith broke down. After listening to their grief, Jesus gently but directly addressed the root issue. He walked them through the Scriptures, from Moses to the prophets, showing them what had actually been written about the Messiah all along. The cross was not a tragedy. It was the plan. This is a loving but honest challenge for all of us. How much of what we expect from God is actually rooted in His Word, and how much is rooted in what we want, what our culture tells us, or what we have simply assumed? When God does not meet our expectations, it is worth asking whether our expectations were ever truly biblical in the first place. This is not meant to be discouraging. It is actually freeing. Because when we let Scripture shape our understanding of God rather than our preferences, we stop being blindsided. We start seeing Him more clearly. And as Jesus spoke truth to those two disciples, something remarkable happened. Their hearts began to burn within them, even before they fully understood why.
Bible Verse
"Then He said to them, 'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!'" - Luke 24:25 (New King James Version (NKJV))
Reflection Question
Are there expectations you have placed on God that are rooted more in personal preference or cultural influence than in what Scripture actually promises?
Quote
"If you don't know your Bible, you will misinterpret 90% of life."
Prayer
Father, give me a hunger for Your Word that shapes how I see You. Correct my expectations with Your truth, and let my heart burn for You again.
